The web series 'IC 814', based on the Kandahar plane hijacking case, has sparked controversy. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned Netflix's content head on Tuesday following complaints about the portrayal of Hindu names for the terrorists in the series.

Background

On December 24, 1999, Air India's IC 814 was hijacked by terrorists after departing from Kathmandu Airport. The plane, carrying 176 passengers, was taken to Kandahar, Afghanistan. The controversy over the series intensified on social media, prompting questions from the BJP as well.

Casting Director’s Explanation

Casting director Mukesh Chhabra defended the series, stating that the terrorists used fake names during the hijack, and the series' names—Bhola, Shankar, Doctor, Burger, and Chief—were chosen based on research as code names.

MEA’s Clarification

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that the real names of the hijackers were Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Saeed, Sunny Ahmad Kazmi, Mistry Zahoor Ibrahim, and Shakir, all of whom were from Pakistan. The ministry is currently investigating the allegations and counter-allegations surrounding the series.
